Course Applications

All courses taken at CSUMB are relevant to my internship, although some are more than others. Examples of relevant course include Operations Management (BUS 311), Principles of Management (BUS 305), Financial Accounting (203), and Business Communications (304). The Operations Management course helped me by introducing concepts and actions that relate to operational tasks and duties that undergo in different companies. This has been important for me because as an intern working on the front of house, it is important for me to understand how operational concepts apply and can be improved. Personally, I would I like to have a career in operations, so learning these concepts is a great way for me to start pursuing mentioned path.

The Principles of Management course has also been helpful because it is important to be a leader, regardless of what department, job, or position one is involved in. Being a leader, learning how to delegate and how to improve are important skills to have, and learning those concepts in the course was great for me to learn about. Working at the front desk exposes me to accounting work all day, and quite honestly, I would not be successful in that work if it was not for the Financial Accounting class. From basic accounting skills, to debits and credits, I am able to work through guests deposits and expenses, even during rare events and regular questions. Knowing how to work these issues gives power and assurance.

Lastly, the Business Communications course has also served of huge help for me by giving me the hard skills of writing and communicating. As an intern, it is critical for me to have solid writing at work. Whether I am sending an email, talking to my manager, or simply communicating with a guest, I need to have the necessary skills to successfully write and communicate. As an intern, I am required to send emails to hundreds of email users, and having good writing is absolutely key because a simple mistake can mean the difference on whether a group is hosting all or no charges for a guest, for example. Being solid at good communication skills can help speak good for oneself.

Although these courses gave me the opportunity to learn and grow, I also think there is room to teach more and help future students as well. Although it is not a lot, I think giving more insights to different industries can be very beneficial to future students. I f professors talked about how course concepts applied to industries in a deeper context, then students would be able to identify and learn more. Sharing about different industries can give insights to students and give them more information about different business sectors, industries, and positions.
