Figure 2: PBC Value Propositions

As a multi-mullion dollar business, Pebble Beach Company (PBC) works in multiple projects throughout the year. In addition to welcoming first and returning guests, Pebble Beach Resorts also plans and hosts world-class events throughout the year. Along with year-round staff, PBC hires temporary staff and volunteers to support these events. Figure 2 shows the three main value propositions that PBC has to offer. These three value propositions are the main foundation to why PBC has been so successful in its industry.

Figure 3: PBC Breakdown of Services

Figure 3 breaks down the main operations that PBC goes through. PBC is a world-class resort, and therefore specializes in its customer service, facility/room features, and on its other activities as well (spa, restaurants, shops, etc.). PBC’s model breaks by assigning the different tasks to different executives. For special events, everyone works together, however the person that oversees all operations is the Director of Special Events. For golf events, the head person is the Director of Golf, although this may vary depending on the golf tournament (some golf tournaments have a chairman or outside staff representatives like the USGA). Although PBC mainly delivers a service and experience, some products delivered are restaurant items, as well as retail merchandise, shop gifts and souvenirs available for sale, and spa products. Some of these products are PBC exclusive, meaning that they are not available for sale anywhere else. This touch makes these products have a higher value.

PBC contributes to the hotel/hospitality industry. With a nationwide hotel industry of $200 billion (Statista, 2018) and a world travel industry of $7 billion (Forbes, 2016), PBC comfortably operates in this sector. However, because PBC operates as a private company, financial information is restricted with market share that they are a part of. The main owners of PBC consist of Arnold Palmer, Richard Ferris, Peter Ueberroth and Clint Eastwood, William Perocchi and GE Pension (Pebble Beach, 2017). It is a bit more difficult to analyze these local hotels, especially since they are all penetrated within the same region. In comparison to the Monterey Portola Hotel and Spa (value not available) and the Marriot International (valued $49.4 Billion, Forbes, 2018), Pebble Beach Company competes with those local hotels with local and tourist customers.

Although Pebble Beach serves people from all over the world, they primarily serve those that can afford the price range, that is, those in middle/upper class, and world tourists. As one of the best resorts in the world, with a 5 star-rated spa and the #1 golf course in the country (Forbes, 2018), Pebble Beach Resorts looks to, “exceed the expectations of every guest by providing a once-in-a-lifetime experience, every time.” (Pebble Beach, 2018). This mission is designed specifically to meet every guest’s expectations with world-class service and world-class facilities. With this, the best operations and the best staff are also needed to perform Pebble Beach standards every day.

With this amazing internship opportunity, I have thought of four major learning outcomes that I am looking forward to achieving throughout my time:

1. Be able to successfully complete all tasks with excellence.
For over the past couple of years, I have worked in jobs that require a heavier amount of physical work in comparison to critical thinking work or analytical work. This internship will allow me to change work styles and focus on using more analytical skills instead of physical. I am aware that it may take me a while to adapt because I am not used to those kinds of work environments, but with a positive attitude and with the help of everyone, I am sure I will catch on fast.

By being part of a new environment, I am also aware that I will need to adjust to everything and everyone, going beyond the simple job responsibilities. This challenge may work against me because as an intern, it is important for me to learn and know as much as I can so that I am able to answer guests’ questions on the spot. Not only would this help me succeed at my job, but it would also feel better about myself.

2. Learn how to interact with guests from all over the world.

There are over 7 billion people living around the world. From what we know, everyone is different, as well as there are different cultures, languages, versions, and styles. By working at a world-class resort that serves everyone all over the world, I will have the opportunity to interact with people from everywhere. I have always thought the the world is amazing, specially its people and how diverse society is. I am excited to have the opportunity to not only meet people, but to also learn from them as well.

Having the opportunity to interact with them will help me enhance my soft skills exponentially. Learning how to talk to people from different backgrounds is very important, especially in the business world. Being in this internship position with help me become comfortable with doing that, as well as with more skills. I believe that practicing this activity will also help me become a more well-rounded person. I hope to learn as much as possible from international and national guests.

3. Learn more in depth of operations within the hospitality industry.
Working at the golf courses gave me an opportunity to learn about golf operations, but the learning was limited. Now that I have taken this internship, I will be in the heart of the action, whether it is standing and checking people in, to helping coordinate and set up a banquet event. Within the weeks working at my internship, I have learned more that what I had imagined. The hospitality industry is so detailed and service-oriented, that it can be demanding and even exhausting at times. You must be a service-driven person to love working in such industry.

Here at Pebble Beach, I have learned about how the main front departments work and communicate, from front desk, to guest services, to in-room dining. Side departments like on-property restaurants and golf shops also communicate with front desk to be aware of group resumes and master listings (some groups may cover different items such as food and beverage, golf, retail, etc.). For special events, banquet services and additional departments may get involved to provide a larger service coverage. I look to learn more about communication methods, management styles, and special event coordinating.
